Miley Cyrus SLAMMED With Backlash After Posing On Joshua Trees — Here’s Why!

Miley Cyrus has recently been giving us all the nostalgic vibes between epic photos with some ex-Disney pals and rocking Hannah Montana-esque hair, but she’s in majorly hot water with some fans over a series of photos.

On Tuesday, the Nothing Breaks Like a Heart songstress shared three Instagram photos, with two of them featuring her posing on Joshua Trees, leaving commenters were less than thrilled.

While she has since turned off comments, there were followers going in on Mrs. Hemsworth’s decision to pose on the trees, a species of the Yucca plant.

One commenter wrote:

“Yucca brevifolia is a plant species belonging to the genus Yucca. It is tree-like in habit, which is reflected in its common names: Joshua tree, Yucca Palm, Tree Yucca, and Palm Tree Yucca. Joshua Trees only grow in one place on Earth- the Mojave Desert (southeast California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona.) The root system of a Joshua tree is incredibly shallow. Repeated abuse by tourists, (over three million visitors a year,) is slowly causing their demise, bringing them closer to being added to the endangered list. Joshua trees take roughly 60 years to mature, and can live up to 500+ years! The trunk consists of thousands of small fibers, and lacks annual growth rings. Its top-heavy weight is a recipe for disaster due to its shallow roots. Hanging, climbing, sitting, swinging, standing, leaning, touching, hugging, supporting your yoga poses, hanging hammocks (or anything else,) on these PROTECTED succulents- (Joshua trees are not actually trees,) are all violations of County and City law…Not to mention incredibly dangerous for the Joshua trees themselves. Any sort of weight or pressure on the branch of a Joshua tree can cause it to break or fall over completely. See a dead one? Leave that alone as well. Dead trees become habitats for local wildlife whether they are still standing or on the ground. Please be mindful and refrain from contributing to their extinction – you are NOT the ONLY person thinking it may be a ‘good idea’ to use a Joshua tree as an Instagram photo prop! Please delete this photo so other tourists don’t get the wrong idea and mimic your damaging behavior.”

For those who aren’t familiar, Joshua Tree, California is a popular camping destination 140 miles east of El Lay that’s known for Instagrammable desert views. Unfortunately, during the recent government shutdown, reports of illegal campsites, downed trees, vandalism, and other destruction were reported by several outlets and shared in photos on social media that left many in an outrage.

Many additional comments followed echoing the above sentiment:

“I love you, but get off the damn yucca. They can’t sustain heavy weight, and your platform tells people it’s ok to get on trees. Our national parks are doomed.”

“Please @mileycyrus do not climb Joshua trees. It is incredibly damaging to them. As a public figure it is your responsibility to set a good example to your followers so we can preserve these trees for generations to come.”

“Miley you’re amazing but, don’t climb on Joshua trees ! They aren’t a normal tree, they can’t handle the weight it hurts them. They want to be admired not climbed on !”

“You should take this down. You are encouraging people to walk and climb all over the beautiful Joshua tree, that are trying to recover from many things. People will do whatever you do, so please be more responsible with your actions and your posts. @joshuatreehatesyou”

She has yet to respond to the situation. Better luck next time, Miley!!
